Model and singer Grace Jones was destined to play an absurd Bond villain – no human being has ever appeared more comfortable defying the norm. Hired to kill Bond and stage it like a suicide, he holds his prey at gunpoint and delivers a long speech about what a talented killer he is. Perhaps with a longer run time than its taut one hour forty-six, Amalric’s portrayal of Greene as a cold, oily yes-man would have had greater impact, but ultimately, as in his final first-fight with Bond, this villain lacks the punch to be remembered as anything other than a footnote. The man has dreams. The stocky, bald-headed Sandor is originally introduced as one half of a henchman partnership. What an odd plan. When he tells Bond he modelled the ‘disgusting’ Gustav Graves on him (‘that unjustifiable swagger, the crass quips’), audiences are briefly reminded of some of the finer James Bond-Bond Villain interactions. Professor Dent is a medium talent in the espionage game (he tries to assassinate Bond with a tarantula of all things), but Dr. No's main man on Jamaica is the central figure in one of the series' most definitive scenes. As a character, Hans doesn't offer much. This series could use a few more villains like Brandt: folks who are just doing a tough job for a thankless employer. However, he's the rare Bond villain to have a change of heart, switching sides during the climax and helping 007 save the day. A View to a Kill may be a lesser Bond film, but it knows good and well that casting Jones as a lead henchman who commands an all-female security team and putting her in a series of outrageous outfits is a fine idea. Viewed through a modern lens, Carver appears both hilariously quaint (a conventional media magnate in a largely pre-digital era) and eerily prescient (information is our new currency) at the same time. Watching our secret agent hero find ways to counter his absurdly powerful opponent makes for some of the best scenes in The Spy Who Loved Me.

The Basics: Henchman who always pays his debts. Not all that outrageous, but on the plus side, it adds up. Need her to seduce a pilot to secure the theft of a few nukes? The Actors: Alejandro Bracho and Guy De Saint Cyr, The Basics: Two henchmen for the price of one. Patrice is not a particularly layered character, though he's the key antagonist in two terrific action scenes.. Revisiting each film based on the merits of its primary antagonist- its ‘Bond villain’- opens new angles from which to analyse the films. 0. Too bad he's in a movie with another, far more menacing Voodoo priest villain who steals his thunder. And with evil schemes that range from the inspired to ludicrous, which all – low key effort in From Russia With Love notwithstanding – encompass a vast level of ambition (not to mention nuclear warheads and super viruses), Blofeld truly sets the standard. If a hero is only as good as his villains, then James Bond is quite the hero indeed. Jay lends life to a third-tier villain, but what a waste! The Actors: Eric Coverly, Charles Edghill, and Henry Lopez, The Basics: A trio of assassins who pose as blind beggars. Kaufman never wanted for his work! Heller is a pretty basic henchman, but he does get impaled with a forklift. Although Blofeld lurks in the shadows throughout From Russia With Love, it's Rosa Klebb who calls all of the direct shots, making her the first (and so far, only) solo female mastermind villain in the series. Outside of his admittedly impressive gift of the gab, Drax dresses in outfits that are neither military chic or GQ model-worthy, making him more than a little drab. Thanks, Grunther! Portrayed by the impossibly beautiful Sophie Marceau and almost always dressed to kill (literally), Elektra King has dash for days. Then James Bond sleeps with his wife. He kills people."

Their sexuality isn't a plot point, it's just a thing, background color for two characters who just so happen to be in a seemingly happy partnership. The baddie calling the shots in GoldenEye, Alec Trevelyan is Bond as seen through a mirror darkly. In short: this guy has it all, and the only reason he doesn’t rank higher is that he’s proven so influential, he almost comes across as a cliché to modern audiences. Thanks, May Day! Stripped back and subdued, ‘For Your Eyes Only’ responds to the delirious excess of Moore’s previous few outings by returning to more grounded espionage thrills, but the results are disappointingly forgettable. He's loud, obnoxious, and crass, played with sleazy southern charm by Joe Don Baker. Cuckoo! The Basics: Sudden, convenient third-act villain. Few Bond villains have suffered like this guy. This highlights the importance of factors away from the leading man- of course aspects such as design, direction, script and score are vital to an entry enjoying enduring success, but the casting and characterisation of Bond’s supporting company cannot be underestimated. He dies appropriately: torn apart by the razor-sharp, remote-controlled torpedo he somehow had the resources to build. He's easily the best member of the "slimy Soviet officers" brigade. But he is an impressive athlete who uses his skills to compete in biathlons and try to kill James Bond.
